Over the years, the Hornberger + Worstell website design had become iconic, even as the website’s framework began to show its age. SEO difficulties, portfolio management limitations, and time-consuming edits had become major issues. The challenge was to update the structure, while keeping the design (known to their customers, and a reassuring sign of stability in troubled times) the same. Using the WordPress CMS, we were able to maximize SEO, vastly expand the portfolio, and include easy, on-the-fly editing for every section of the website. Additionally, we integrated a flexible media section that allowed Hornberger + Worstell to both push out multi-media content, as well as integrate mailing list software to better manage their marketing and PR efforts.

When you’re the only one in the peloton able to wear your jersey design, you want a completely unique website to match. Working with a designer, I applied the national champion’s red, white, and blue color scheme to an unusual WordPress theme that really stands out. Then I added functionality that allows her to update her blog, news, and sponsor materials easily and display them separately around the site. Integration with Twitter and Facebook allows her fans to keep up with her as she travels around the country wearing the stars & stripes.

Sarah came to me needing a reasonably-priced solution that would allow her to self-maintain and promote her growing portfolio. We chose WordPress due to its ease-of-use and design flexibility, and a minimalist design to focus visitors’ attention on her work. We also incorporated a blog, allowing her to post updates on works-in-progress and images that fall outside the scope of her portfolio. The end result was a simple, stable website, which Sarah can maintain herself, that highlights her work to galleries, collectors, and residencies.

This is totally self-serving because it’s my other business interest! Having been open since 1986, Velo Veneto focused primarily on the on-the-bike experience and let the website and marketing materials age. Working with a graphic design partner, we created a completely new image including a logo, print materials, website, and clothing. We also focused on website SEO, generating more search engine traffic in the first week of the new website than in the previous 3 months combined! The proof is in the bookings, and I’ll update this with our 2010 results.

The problem for new projects is often matching need and budget. While Fred Morini is not (yet!) a household name in the US cycling community, those who have ridden with him in Europe are quite keen to do so again. Fred and his partner Cyclokinetics needed to establish a web presence for their US-based cycling clinics that would scale easily as Fred and the Cyclokinetics brands grow. Using a WordPress back-end allows them to adapt their web design for each camp at little extra cost and easily update content themselves, allowing them to focus their budget on increasing their visibility in the US market.

A new brand operated by WTB, the focus of Freedom is enabling more people to use bicycles as transportation and recreation. At launch, Freedom products were focused on the OEM market, so the challenge was to provide an attractive online information resource that supported sales staff. My role was to manage the web development process to ensure the technical information was communicated in a clear, consistent way that supported the brand goals. The end result was an on-time, on-budget website that has grown from simply a company into a movement directing more than $700MM in funds towards safer, non-motorized transportation infrastructure.

Hot Rod Cameras invented and sells a unique adapter that enables Photographers to shoot cinema quality video and images on their camera. The adapter was created for a specific new camera, and with that camera’s launch coming soon, Hot Rod needed a website fast! Not only did they need it fast, but they wanted to manage content themselves and had specific video and image handling requirements as well. Oh, and of course they were on a tight budget. The solution came through adapting a pre-chosen theme to WordPress, and then installing sophisticated image and video display applications. In short order, Hot Rod Cameras had a beautiful, user-friendly website and an exclusive distribution deal!
